Diamond ADU:
The beauty of the dilapidated farm structures of Sonoma wine country inspire a guest house filled with light>

This new accessory dwelling unit (ADU) takes inspiration from the dilapidated farm structures that dot the landscape of the Sonoma wine country –legally preserved from outright demolition and thus in a state of constant decay. These relics have their own strange elegance though; their original steeply sloped roofs now drooping into low slung structures, peeling apart allowing in unexpected puddles of natural light, and revealing fragments of their interior framing to the outside elements.

Onomatopoeic Space: I Make My Own Name:
A poetic device becomes an architectural one>

Some words take shape directly from the expressiveness of the sounds they name –WHAM! POW! SPLAT! Poets often use these onomatopoeic words to engage us with the images they hope to create in our mind’s eye. This idea –that the construction of a word could be intimately tied to the image it evokes– made us wonder if there might be a corollary in architecture. In other words, a kind of space directly formed by the artistic impulses it houses –a space in which art, artist, community, and environment are as expressive as the words BAM! BANG! BOOM! –an Onomatopoeic Space.

Lichen Trellis:
The delicate shadows of lace lichen inform a sun shade>

Enamored by the atmospheric lace lichen shadows cast around this site’s mature oaks, we set out to evoke the essence of those spaces with aluminum and rivets. With help from our enthusiastic contractor, we used a series of metal fins strategically fixed with pop-rivets to create an undulating pattern. The proof of concept, however –even more than the form and beauty of the trellis itself– was in the delicacy of the shadows they cast.

Laura P. Huylebroeck, Architect:
Associate Principal

Laura, a licensed architect in the state of California, has been with S^A since 2014. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arizona where she graduated Cum Laude and received both the prestigious national AIA Alpha Rho Chi Medal and a Capstone Project Award, as well as an athletic soccer scholarship. Laura’s work –From Ruin to Wetland –was a critical analysis of the possible transformations of historical structures and urban ruins.
